The 2025 Met Gala Celebrates Black Men in Fashion: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”

The 2025 Met Gala is set to make history as it celebrates Black men in fashion like never before. The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced the theme and co-chairs for next year’s event, with a focus on highlighting the contributions of Black men to the world of style.

The Costume Institute exhibition, titled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” will showcase the evolution of Black fashion from the 18th century to the present, inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book on Black dandyism. This groundbreaking exhibit will explore the intersection of race, identity, and fashion, shedding light on the complex history of Black style.

Renowned fashion figures like Anna Wintour have selected Black male celebrities like Pharrell Williams, A$AP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton, and Colman Domingo as co-chairs for the gala. These men, known for their unique sartorial visions, will bring a fresh perspective to the event, along with honorary chair LeBron James.

In addition to the celebrity co-chairs, the exhibition will also highlight the work of Black designers, particularly those in menswear. Designers like Virgil Abloh, Martine Rose, and Grace Wales Bonner will be celebrated for their innovative approaches to fashion and their exploration of identity through design.

Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s curator, emphasized the importance of diversifying the museum’s exhibitions and collections by focusing on Black designers. He noted that these designers often incorporate their heritage and history into their work, creating pieces that are both culturally significant and visually stunning.

The 2025 Met Gala promises to be a night to remember, celebrating the creativity and contributions of Black men in fashion. Stay tuned for the official dress code announcement early next year.
