The Dangerous Use of the “Jezebel Spirit” Label by Christian Nationalist Leaders

Christian nationalist leaders are spreading a dangerous and deeply racist message about Vice President Kamala Harris, labeling her as being under the influence of a “Jezebel spirit.” This term, rooted in misogyny and racism, has been historically used to demonize Black women and is now being weaponized against Harris, a Christian and Baptist.

The concept of the “Jezebel spirit” draws from the biblical story of Queen Jezebel, who was portrayed as an evil figure and met a gruesome end. By associating Harris with this term, religious scholars warn that it is a coded way of dehumanizing her and suggesting she is unfit for office.

The usage of this term comes from a politicized movement within charismatic Christianity called the New Apostolic Reformation, which believes in spiritual warfare and demonic influences. Leaders within this movement are using the “Jezebel spirit” rhetoric to galvanize their followers and justify aggressive actions, including violence.

The dangerous implications of this rhetoric are evident in the events of Jan. 6, where believers engaged in what they called “spiritual warfare” during the Capitol insurrection. The movement’s influence has only grown since then, with increased talk of spiritual warfare in American politics.

As the 2024 election approaches, the use of the “Jezebel spirit” rhetoric has seeped into down-ballot races, further polarizing the political landscape. The message being spread by Christian nationalist leaders is not only divisive but also potentially incendiary, as it demonizes political opponents and justifies extreme actions in the name of faith.

The implications of this rhetoric go beyond politics, as it perpetuates harmful stereotypes and fuels hatred towards marginalized groups. It is crucial for society to recognize and push back against such dangerous messaging that seeks to dehumanize and vilify individuals based on their gender, race, or political beliefs.
