Students at Morehouse College Protest During President Biden’s Commencement Speech

President Joe Biden’s commencement speech at Morehouse College in Atlanta on Sunday took an unexpected turn as several students staged a pro-Palestine protest during the ceremony. More than 400 students graduated, with some of them turning their chairs around to face away from Biden while wearing keffiyehs in protest of policy decisions in Israel’s conflict with Hamas.

Before Biden took the stage, Morehouse valedictorian DeAngelo Fletcher called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza strip during his address, which was met with applause from the audience and the president himself. Biden acknowledged the students protesting during his speech, expressing his support for peaceful, nonviolent protest and promising to work towards an immediate ceasefire.

The president also highlighted his administration’s efforts to support Black Americans, emphasizing the importance of creating more opportunities for them in terms of jobs, small businesses, housing, and healthcare. With the upcoming general election in November, Biden’s speech was filled with themes of resilience and adversity, serving as a warning about the potential consequences for Black Americans if his opponent, former President Donald Trump, were to be re-elected.

Biden’s message to the graduating class was one of hope and empowerment, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and celebrating Black history as an integral part of American history. Despite the protests and challenges faced, the president urged the students to continue making history and shaping the future of the country.
