Apple Inc. Appoints Cynthia Bowman as New Diversity Chief: A Look at DEI Efforts and Challenges

Apple Inc. has appointed Cynthia Bowman as its new diversity chief, aiming to enhance inclusivity within its workforce. Bowman, a seasoned professional with a notable 17-year tenure at Bank of America, will succeed Barbara Whye as vice president of inclusion and diversity at Apple.

“We are excited that Cynthia Bowman will serve as Apple’s next Vice-President of inclusion and diversity,” an Apple spokesperson stated. “Bowman is an accomplished leader in her field and is deeply committed to the work we’re doing to advance inclusion and diversity at Apple.”

Bowman’s appointment comes as Apple continues its efforts to diversify its workforce. The company’s $200 million Racial Equity and Justice Initiative focuses on education, criminal justice reform, and economic equality. As the new diversity chief, Bowman will report to Apple’s Chief People Officer, Carol Surface, and collaborate with internal groups to support these initiatives.

While Apple has made progress in increasing diversity within its workforce, challenges persist. Between 2014 and 2022, the percentage of Black employees at Apple rose from 7% to 9%, Asian employees doubled to 30%, and Latina workers increased from 11% to 15%. Globally, the proportion of women in Apple’s workforce grew from 30% to 35%.

However, the broader push for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) has faced resistance in corporate America. Forrester Research predicts that the proportion of US companies funding a DEI function will drop to 20% by the end of this year, down from 33% in 2022.

Bowman’s appointment signals Apple’s ongoing commitment to fostering a more inclusive workplace and advancing diversity initiatives within the company.
