NCAA Releases Annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) Statistics for Division I HBCU Conferences

The NCAA recently released its annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) statistics, and the numbers are in for the Division I Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) conferences. The results are not only intriguing but also encouraging for the academic success of student-athletes in these institutions.

In the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, North Carolina Central stood out with the highest overall APR of 957, with both the men’s and women’s basketball teams achieving a perfect score of 1,000. Norfolk State and Maryland-Eastern Shore tied for the second-highest APR at 938, showcasing a strong commitment to academic excellence within the conference.

Over in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Texas Southern’s men’s basketball team led the way with an impressive APR of 989, followed closely by Southern at 973. Jackson State’s football program also excelled with a 966 APR, demonstrating a dedication to both athletics and academics.

Tennessee State, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, showcased a perfect 1,000 APR for men’s basketball, while Hampton’s women’s basketball team also achieved a flawless score. North Carolina A&T, another Coastal Athletic Association member, joined the ranks of excellence with a 1,000 APR for women’s basketball.

While many HBCU programs excelled in the APR rankings, some faced challenges, such as Delaware State’s men’s basketball team, which received a penalty for a low APR of 844. Despite these setbacks, the overall trend in the HBCU conferences is one of improvement and dedication to academic success.
