CIAA Board of Directors Approves Durham, NC as Site of Conference Championship Game

Durham, North Carolina, has been selected as the new site for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship game, following a vote by the CIAA Board of Directors last week. The championship game will be held at the Durham County Memorial Stadium, marking a return to the venue where the event has thrived in the past.

CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams expressed excitement about the decision, citing the opportunity to showcase top teams in a centralized location. The conference considered bids from Charlotte and Salem, Virginia, but ultimately chose Durham based on factors such as facility use, community engagement opportunities, and local business involvement.

Salem, the previous host of the CIAA championship since 2017, was commended for its expertise in hosting major sporting events. However, Durham’s history with the event and its commitment to diversity and community engagement were key factors in the decision.

Marcus Manning, executive director of the Durham sports commission, expressed pride in hosting the CIAA Football Championship once again, highlighting the vibrant community and dedication to creating an unforgettable experience for fans and student-athletes.

The championship game was previously held in Durham from 2008-2012 and 2014-2015, drawing large crowds of over 10,000 fans. In addition to the football championship, Durham will also host the CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship at the same venue through 2025.

Shaw University, a CIAA member, currently hosts its home football and soccer games at the Durham County Memorial Stadium. The move to Durham reflects the CIAA’s commitment to providing a top-notch experience for its teams and fans, while also engaging with the local community.
