Assault on Middle School Student by Grown Man: A Shocking Incident at Whatcom Middle School
In a shocking and disturbing incident, a 42-year-old man, identified as Paul Jonathan Bittner, allegedly assaulted a Black 6th-grade student from Whatcom Middle School in Bellingham, Wash. The incident occurred as students were returning from a school field trip, with Bittner reportedly approaching the group and attacking the student, causing him to chip his tooth.
Witnesses stated that Bittner yelled racial slurs at the student before fleeing the scene, only to be apprehended by a chaperon and later arrested by local police. Bittner has since been charged with malicious harassment and assault of a child in the second degree, with his bail set at $500,000.
The victim’s identity has not been disclosed, and it remains unclear if he was the only Black student in the group. The school has assured parents and students that the incident is being investigated as a hate crime, and counseling support will be provided to those in need.
Principal Mischelle Darragh expressed shock and anger over the attack, emphasizing the school’s commitment to supporting the affected students. The community is reeling from this senseless act of violence, with many calling for justice and accountability for the perpetrator.
