Family Retains Civil Rights Representation After Deputy Shoots 5-Year-Old Instead of Carjacking Suspect

An Atlanta family is seeking justice after a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy allegedly shot their 5-year-old daughter during a chaotic carjacking incident involving a suspect wanted for aggravated assault and kidnapping.

The incident unfolded on June 23 when the Dallas Police Department attempted to arrest 25-year-old Rashauny Mike Palmer. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Palmer managed to escape custody, steal a Dodge Charger, and lead officers on a high-speed chase before crashing into a tractor-trailer.

After abandoning the vehicle and attempting to carjack a BMW at a BP Gas station, a deputy reportedly fired at the car, inadvertently hitting the young girl in the backseat. Fortunately, she survived her injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Palmer was eventually apprehended and now faces multiple charges, including criminal attempt to commit murder and kidnapping. The GBI is conducting an independent investigation into the incident, while the family of the injured child has retained civil rights representation to pursue legal action against the deputy involved.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump condemned the deputy’s actions, calling for his immediate termination and accountability for endangering innocent lives. The family is seeking justice and answers as they navigate the aftermath of this traumatic event.
