Delaware State University’s Proposed Convocation Center in Capital Bond Bill
Delaware State University stakeholders have reason to be excited as a capital bond bill proposal for the state of Delaware includes plans for a new convocation center on campus. House Bill 475, the state’s Capital Improvement projects budget for FY 2025, highlighted the need for such a facility at DSU and in Central Delaware.
The proposal, which was met with approval by the joint committee for Capital Improvements, stated that the committee will work towards exploring options for funding the building of the facility in future fiscal years. In addition, DSU will collaborate with local healthcare leaders to plan a Health Institute to be incorporated within the Convocation Center.
This news comes as DSU has already begun efforts to upgrade its athletic facilities, with fundraising efforts of 10 million dollars announced earlier this year. Projects such as a football field house, locker room improvements for various sports teams, and a new grandstand for Alumni Stadium are already in the works.
The potential convocation center would likely replace Memorial Hall’s gymnasium, which currently has a limited seating capacity. A previous feasibility study for a convocation center was conducted in 2014, indicating that this has been a long-awaited development for the university.
With plans for a new convocation center on the horizon, Delaware State University is poised to enhance its athletic facilities and provide a state-of-the-art venue for various events and programs. Stakeholders can look forward to further updates on this exciting project in the coming years.
