Colman Domingo Shines Light on Rehabilitation Through Arts Program with Upcoming Film “Sing, Sing”
At the 2024 BET Awards held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo made waves with his upcoming film, “Sing, Sing.” Directed by Greg Kwedar, the film features Domingo as Divine G, a man wrongly imprisoned at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in New York. The story follows Divine G as he finds purpose and redemption through a theatre group comprised of fellow incarcerated individuals.
What sets “Sing, Sing” apart is its focus on the real-life Rehabilitation Through Arts (RTA) program, which has been operating at Sing Sing since 1996. The program aims to help individuals in prison develop critical life skills through the arts, with a remarkable 3 percent recidivism rate compared to the national average of over 60 percent.
Domingo, known for his intentional role choices, emphasized the importance of art in rehabilitation, quoting Rhodessa Jones, a worker at a similar program in California. He expressed his hope that the film would shed light on the resilience of the human spirit and the power of humanity.
With early critiques praising the performances of the cast, “Sing, Sing” is set to hit theaters on July 12, offering audiences a poignant and thought-provoking look at the transformative impact of the arts in the criminal justice system.
