Calls for Justice in Death of Black Man Pinned by Security Guards at Milwaukee Hotel Grow Amid Republican National Convention
Calls for justice in the death of D’Vontaye Mitchell, a Black man who was pinned to the ground during a struggle with security guards at a Milwaukee hotel, are intensifying as the city prepares for the Republican National Convention. Mitchell’s death on June 30 has reignited discussions on race and systemic brutality against Black individuals by those in authority, following the killing of George Floyd in 2020.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who also represented Floyd’s family, emphasized the importance of demanding justice for Mitchell’s death. Mitchell’s family has called for charges to be filed against those responsible for his death, as they believe he was unjustly killed by security guards at the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee.
Surveillance video viewed by Mitchell’s family and their legal team showed a disturbing scene of an unarmed man being violently restrained and dragged outside the hotel. Witnesses described Mitchell as trying to flee for his life and posing no threat to the security guards.
The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office is currently reviewing the case as a homicide, awaiting full autopsy results to determine the cause of Mitchell’s death. The family’s legal team also presented a signed affidavit from a hotel employee detailing the excessive force used by security guards against Mitchell.
Despite the upcoming Republican National Convention, Mitchell’s family is determined to keep his case in the spotlight and ensure that justice is served. They have changed his funeral date to Thursday to prevent his story from being overshadowed by the political event.
As calls for justice grow louder, the nation watches closely as Milwaukee grapples with the aftermath of Mitchell’s tragic death and the ongoing fight against racial violence and police brutality.
