Armed Robbery Suspect Bennie Gates Apprehended by Elmhurst Police
Nineteen-year-old Bennie Gates of Chicago found himself in hot water after a failed attempt to disguise himself as a woman following an armed robbery at the Elmhurst Terrace Apartment complex.
According to reports, Gates allegedly robbed a man who offered him a ride from the Chicago Greyhound Bus Station for $40. After arriving at their destination, Gates pulled out a gun, demanded his money back, and even had the driver retrieve his suitcase from the trunk before walking away.
The victim quickly alerted Elmhurst Police, who were able to identify Gates as the suspect and began surveilling the area. A detective spotted Gates trying to make a getaway in an Uber, wearing a wig as a disguise. However, police were quick to initiate a traffic stop and apprehend Gates as he attempted to flee on foot.
DuPage County Stateโs Attorney Robert Berlin commended the Elmhurst Police Department for their vigilance in capturing Gates, stating that his attempt to disguise himself did not fool anyone.
Gates has since been charged with armed robbery with a firearm and appeared in court on Sunday morning. He is scheduled to be arraigned on July 29th, facing the consequences of his alleged criminal actions.
