Mother of Missing Black Trans Woman Reveals Hidden Detail Amid Search

The case of Taylor Casey, the Black Chicago woman who went missing in the Bahamas, has taken a new turn as her mother reveals a detail that she had kept hidden from the public. Casey has been identified as a transgender woman, a fact that her mother feared would shift the focus away from finding her daughter.

Colette Seymore, Casey’s mother, expressed her concerns to NBC News, stating that she believed if her daughter were a cisgender white woman, the investigation would have been handled differently. She pointed to the stark difference in media coverage between missing white women like Gabby Petito and missing Black women, highlighting the disparities in attention and resources allocated to these cases.

Furthermore, the statistics on violence against transgender individuals in Latin America and the Caribbean, where Casey was last seen, raise additional concerns about her safety. Despite being the only Black and transgender woman at the yoga retreat she was attending, authorities have not found any evidence of foul play in her disappearance.

As Casey’s family continues to search for answers, they have enlisted the help of the FBI and Illinois legislators. With her 42nd birthday passing on Thursday, the urgency to find Casey and bring her home safely grows stronger. The discovery of her phone and belongings by the Royal Bahamas Police Force provides a glimmer of hope in the ongoing investigation.
