Former Lane College wide receiver and Super Bowl champion Jacoby Jones has tragically passed away at the age of 40, just three days after celebrating his birthday. The news was first shared by former McNeese State quarterback James Tabary on Twitter, with the Baltimore Sun later confirming the heartbreaking loss.

Jones’ former teammates and NFL colleagues, including J.J. Watt and Torrey Smith, have taken to social media to pay tribute to the beloved wide receiver. Watt described Jones as one of the most fun-loving teammates he had ever been around, always dancing, laughing, and with a permanent smile on his face. Smith expressed his deep sorrow at the loss, highlighting Jones’ impact on the world and the lasting memories he leaves behind.

Jones began his football career at Lane College, where he excelled as a return specialist and earned three All-SIAC team selections. He was drafted by the Houston Texans in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft, becoming the first and only player from Lane College to be drafted into the NFL. Jones went on to play nine seasons in the league with the Texans, Baltimore Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers, and San Diego Chargers.

His standout season came in 2012 with the Ravens, where he earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro First Team honors. Jones played a crucial role in the team’s Super Bowl 47 victory, scoring a memorable 108-yard kickoff return touchdown in the game. After retiring from playing, Jones transitioned into coaching, working with various college football programs, including his alma mater and Alabama State.

The football world mourns the loss of Jacoby Jones, a talented player, and beloved coach whose legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
