President Biden Affirms Commitment to Black Community at NAACP Convention
President Joe Biden made a bold statement at the 115th NAACP National Convention in Las Vegas, addressing Black folks and clarifying his stance on Black issues in the wake of the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. In a 30-minute speech, Biden declared he is “all in” and shared his plans for the future, including what he believes constitutes a “Black job.”
Following a racially charged remark by Trump about migrants taking “Black jobs,” Biden took the opportunity to set the record straight. He confidently stated, “I know what the hell a ‘Black job’ is. It’s the vice president of the United States,” referencing his own position as well as former President Barack Obama’s historic presidency.
Biden emphasized his commitment to the Black community, highlighting his nomination of Justice Ketanji Brown-Jackson as the first Black woman to the U.S. Supreme Court and his efforts to reduce Black unemployment to historic lows. He also outlined future plans, such as cutting taxes for the working class and investing in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Despite his efforts, Biden’s approval rating among the Black community has seen a decline, dropping from 86% in 2021 to 55% in April 2024, according to PEW Research. While his speech was well-received at the convention, some Black Americans remain skeptical of the Democratic nominee.
As Biden gears up for the upcoming election, he is focused on passing legislation that directly impacts Black Americans, such as the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the George Floyd Policing Act. With his eyes set on the future, Biden aims to regain the trust of the Black community and secure their support in the upcoming election.
