Donald Glover Retiring Childish Gambino Moniker, Releasing New Album and Film

After six albums under the moniker Childish Gambino, Donald Glover has announced that he will be retiring the name this month. In an interview with the New York Times ahead of the release of his sixth album, Bando Stone & the New World, Glover explained that he no longer felt connected to the name and that it was time to move on.

Bando Stone & The New World will be Glover’s second album of 2024, following Atavista, the updated version of his 2020 LP 3.15.20. In addition to his music comeback, Glover is gearing up for a massive world tour from August 2024 to February 2025, where he will be joined by Willow Smith and Amaarae.

To accompany the new album, there will also be a film of the same name, available exclusively in IMAX theaters. The movie, produced by RCA and Gilga, follows Glover’s character, Bando Stone, a famous musician navigating a post-apocalyptic world despite his only talent being singing.

In addition to his music career, Glover has also made waves in the acting world. Despite the renewal of the show Mr. & Mrs. Smith by Amazon Prime, Glover will not be returning for the second season. While he will still be credited as a co-creator and executive producer, it is speculated that his musical commitments may have influenced his decision not to return to the show.
