Actor Blair Underwood recently shared insights into his time on the hit HBO show “Sex and the City.” In an interview with the A.V. Club, the 59-year-old actor revealed that he was initially offered a role on the series a year before he eventually appeared as Miranda Hobbs’ boyfriend and neighbor, Dr. Robert Leeds.

Underwood explained that he initially turned down the offer because the role was centered around Samantha’s curiosity about dating a Black man and her interest in his anatomy. He expressed his discomfort with playing a character based solely on race and declined the role.

However, the “Sex and the City” producers reached out to Underwood a year later with a different offer for the role of Dr. Leeds. This time, they assured him that the character’s race would not be a focal point of the storyline.

Throughout his career, Underwood has been adamant about not wanting to be typecast as “the Black guy.” He commended the “Sex and the City” production team for their approach to his character and appreciated their efforts to avoid racial stereotypes.

Despite initial reservations, Underwood accepted the role of Dr. Leeds and appeared in five episodes of the show. He reflected on the positive experience he had working on the series and praised the production team for their professionalism.

Currently, Underwood is set to star in Starz’ drama series “Three Women,” which is scheduled to premiere on September 13. Fans can look forward to seeing him in this new project following his successful career in movies and TV shows like “Set It Off” and “L.A. Law.”
