Black Twitter Finds Humor in New Olympic “Breaking” Competition
As the Olympics draw to a close, Black people on social media have found a new reason to laugh – the newly introduced “Breaking” competition at the Summer Games. Breakdancing made its debut at the Paris Olympics, with teams from various countries showcasing their skills in this unique event.
Viewers tuning in to watch the competition were in for a surprise, as the performances were more entertaining than expected. While the dancers did a commendable job, Black Twitter couldn’t help but poke fun at some of the outfits and moves on display. The jokes and memes flooded social media, adding a humorous twist to the event.
Despite the lighthearted commentary online, the dancers took the competition seriously. B-Girl Ami from Japan made history by becoming the first person to win a gold medal in breaking, defeating competitors from Lithuania and China. Team USA also had a representative in B-Boy Jeffro, adding to the diversity of the competition.
The popularity of hip-hop and Black culture has contributed to the global appeal of breakdancing, with young enthusiasts worldwide taking up the art form. However, the performances at the Olympics were a far cry from the stylized portrayals in movies like “You Got Served” or “Stomp the Yard.”
While the competition may have provided some comedic relief for viewers, the dedication and talent of the dancers were evident. As the Olympics come to a close, the introduction of breakdancing has added a new and exciting element to the Games, captivating audiences and showcasing the diversity of talent on display.
