From Head Coach to Assistant: Fred McNair’s Journey to Southern
Former Alcorn State head coach Fred McNair has found a new sense of purpose and happiness as the tight ends coach at Southern University. After a near-miss with the head coaching position at Texas Southern, McNair has embraced his new role with enthusiasm and positivity.
McNair, who led Alcorn State to two SWAC championships and five East Division titles in his eight seasons as head coach, was initially thought to be the frontrunner for the head coaching job at Texas Southern. However, the Board of Regents ultimately decided to go in a different direction, leaving McNair to reflect on the experience and move forward.
Despite the disappointment of not landing the head coaching position at Texas Southern, McNair has found solace and fulfillment in his current role at Southern University. He credits the coaching staff and the program’s rich tradition for making him feel at home and excited for the future.
Transitioning from a head coach to an assistant position may be seen as a step backward for some, but for McNair, it has been a welcomed change. He appreciates the reduced pressure and responsibilities that come with being an assistant coach, allowing him to focus on his passion for coaching and developing players.
As Southern University enters a new era under first-year head coach Terrence Graves, McNair is eager to contribute to the team’s success and continue his coaching journey with a renewed sense of purpose and happiness. Despite the challenges and setbacks he has faced, McNair remains optimistic and determined to make a positive impact at Southern University.
