Kamala Harris Makes History as First Black Woman to Clinch Presidential Nomination at DNC

In a historic moment for American politics, Kamala Harris is set to become the first Black woman and person of South Asian descent to clinch the presidential nomination from a major political party at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on Thursday.

This milestone is seen as a long-overdue recognition of the contributions of Black women to the Democratic Party, who have been the backbone of the racially and ethnically diverse party for decades.

Joy Reid, host of MSNBC’s “The ReidOut,” highlighted the significance of Harris’ nomination in paying homage to the legacy of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black person and woman to run for the White House in 1972. Despite Chisholm’s unsuccessful bid, her campaign paved the way for future generations of Black women in politics.

Reid also acknowledged the efforts of other pioneering Black women in Democratic politics, such as the “Colored Girls” who worked behind the scenes to support Harris’ rise to the top of the ticket.

While Black women have played a crucial role in shaping the Democratic Party, Reid noted that they have not always received the recognition and power they deserve. However, the organizing efforts of Black women have led to significant wins for the party, including Harris’ selection as Joe Biden’s running mate in 2020.

As Harris prepares to make history at the DNC, Reid emphasized the importance of media coverage in shaping the narrative around her campaign. With less than 80 days until Election Day, the spotlight is on Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, as they seek to unite voters against the “anti-democracy movement” led by their opponents.

Despite the challenges ahead, Harris’ unique identity and political abilities have garnered widespread enthusiasm and support from a diverse range of voters. As the country looks towards a future led by Harris, Reid believes that her presence as a female leader will help heal and unite a divided nation.
